Image Overlays

Configure room-specific image and text overlays so every uploaded team photo is branded automatically before players view or share it

Image overlays brand every group photo at the room level. Upload a transparent PNG overlay once, and Escape Kit composites it onto every photo your team uploads for that room — so players see your branding on the debrief page, in share flows, and in Facebook auto-posts.

Go to Escape Rooms[Room Name]Overlays.

Enable overlays

The Photo Overlays card at the top of the tab controls whether overlays are applied for this room. Toggle the switch to Overlays Enabled and click Save.

When disabled, photos are uploaded and displayed without any overlay processing — even if overlay images are configured below.

Upload image overlays

The Image Overlays card lets you upload a transparent PNG for each photo orientation. Use the orientation selector to switch between Square, Landscape, and Portrait, then upload an overlay for each.

Overlay images should be PNG format with transparent areas where the photo shows through. The upload accepts files up to 5 MB and validates that the aspect ratio matches the selected orientation.

When a photo is uploaded to a group, Escape Kit picks the closest orientation match and composites the overlay onto the photo automatically.

Pro Tip: Upload all three orientation overlays even if your team usually shoots one format. A single odd-angle photo from a phone can otherwise be cropped more aggressively to fit the only available overlay.

Configure text overlays

The Text Overlay Settings card adds dynamic text on top of photos, configured separately for Success and Fail outcomes. Use the type selector at the top of the card to switch between them.

Enable and position

Apply Text Overlay
Toggle to enable text for this outcome type. Off by default for both Success and Fail.
Position
Where the text appears on the photo. Choose from Bottom Left, Bottom Middle, Bottom Right, Top Left, Top Middle, or Top Right.

Text lines

Each type has two text lines, each with its own size and color:

Text - Line 1
The primary text line. Supports variable insertion via the Insert button.
Text - Line 2
The secondary text line. Also supports variable insertion.
Size
Font size for each line (0–100). Default: 5.
Color
Hex color for each line. Default: #000000.

Available variables:

Variable Available on Description
{team_name} Success and Fail The team name recorded during game completion
{escape_time} Success only The team's escape time

Common Mistake: {escape_time} is designed for Success overlays. Fail groups typically don't have an escape time, so the variable will be empty if used in a Fail overlay.

Spacing and margins

Line Spacing
Vertical space between Line 1 and Line 2. Default: 0.
Margin-X
Horizontal offset from the edge. Default: 0.
Margin-Y
Vertical offset from the edge. Default: 2.

How overlays affect photos across Escape Kit

  • Overlays are composited onto photos after upload. Once processed, the branded version is what players see on the debrief page, in share flows, and in Facebook auto-posts.
  • The original upload is stored separately, so you always have the unbranded version.

Behind the Scenes: Overlay processing happens asynchronously. While processing is in progress, the original photo may be shown briefly. If processing fails, the photo shows an error indicator on the group detail page and can be retried.
